Welcome to my blog. I am a pioneer in the field of abstract sequential art and abstract comics, which combine the conventions of traditional comics with abstract painting and drawing to achieve works on canvas and paper using a range of formats, scales, techniques and media, including comics books. Following the completion of a Bachelor of Education – Art, I have taught high school in Queensland and England. In 2004 I received of Masters of Arts at Nottingham University and in 2016 I was awarded a Doctor of Creative Arts from the University of Sunshine Coast. My thesis and associated exhibition investigated the new genre of abstract sequential art, which shows sequence and movement using a variety of abstract subject matter, media and styles. The exhibition displayed the original 126 sequential A3 pages of my abstract graphic novel as one whole work. I have published an academic paper about this topic and have spoken at four international Arts or Comics conferences.
Between 2013 and 2018 I will have participated in nine group and three solo exhibitions, as well as being a finalist in three art prizes. Also during this time I was selected for the Margaret Ellen Turner Residency, which supports emerging artists, and helped advance my practice. In addition, I have produced and published an abstract graphic novel and three abstract comics books, and because of this, I was recently invited to participate in a pop-up comics, zine and book event at the University of Queensland in conjunction with the Robert Smithson exhibition.
I have recently exhibited large works on paper and canvas at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre, which received a good review in the Sunshine Coast Daily. Sourced at this site: https://www.pressreader.com/australia/sunshine-coast-daily/20180706/281771334944354
In addition, I have a featured work in the King George Square Outdoor Gallery until November 2018. During October my abstract comics and their original drawings will be exhibited at the Maroochydore Library Artspace, at the invitation of the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery. https://gallery.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Exhibitions/Maroochydore-Artspace/Abstract-Comics.
I continue to enjoy part-time teaching secondary school Art, as well as daily studio practice, and generating a career as an abstract artist.
